Northern State University was founded in 1901 -- initially as a teacher's college. NSU offers nearly 40 Bachelor degree programs and 12 Master's. Most coursework is in counseling or education. Other majors offered include Administrative Assistant and Secretarial Science, International Business, Parks, Recreation & Leisure Facilities Management, Physical Education Teaching and Coaching, and Ecology. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Northern State #48 among midwestern universities offering a Bachelor's degree. The campus is located in the northeast part of the state in the town of Aberdeen (pop.25k), about 100 miles north of the state capital, Pierre. Head coach Curt Frederickson enters his 30th season at Northern State in 2007-08. No one at the D2 level has won a greater percentage of games (.766) over a longer period of time than Frederickson. In fact, there are only three coaches at any level with a greater winning percentage with 20 or more years in the businsess. NSU, a powerhouse in the early 90's as an NAIA institution (at one stretch winning 45 consecutive games) has made four NCAA appearances since joining the NCAA in 1995-96. During his tenure, Frederickson has won 20 or more games 21 times. Following a 25-7 mark in 2005-06, the Wolves went 20-9 in 2006-07 but did not receive an NCAA bid.

Northern State plays in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (www.northernsun.org) which is comprised of ten teams from Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska. Northern State will play each team twice, home and away. The 18 game conference schedule usually starts in December. League games on typically Fridays and Saturdays and often piggybacked with the women. The farthest conference away game is at Winona State some 475 miles from campus. The season concludes with the Northern Sun tourney which includes all eight teams with the winner receiving a berth in the NCAA tourney.
Southwest Minnesota State, Minnesota St-Moorhead, U. Minnesota-Crookson, Bemidji St, Wayne St, Concordia-St. Paul, U. of Mary, Upper Iowa, and Winona State.
