Northern State University was founded in 1901 -- initially as a teacher's college. NSU offers nearly 40 Bachelor degree programs and 12 Master's. Most coursework is in counseling or education. Other majors offered include Administrative Assistant and Secretarial Science, International Business, Parks, Recreation & Leisure Facilities Management, Physical Education Teaching and Coaching, and Ecology. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Northern State #48 among midwestern universities offering a Bachelor's degree. Head coach Don Meyer completed his 9th season at Northern State in 2007-08. Prior to Northern State, Meyer coached at Lipscomb (NAIA) for 24 seasons. There he reached the 700 win plateau faster than any other coach in the history of college basketball. Inheriting a program in 1999-00 that had produced seven consecutive 20+ winning seasons, Meyer struggled his first two seasons but has since captured seven consecutive 20+ winning seasons. A former player at the University of Northern Colorado, Meyer began his coaching career at Western State as an assistant. His first head coaching job was at Hamline University (D3). With 35 years of coaching behind him, Meyer possess a .749 wininng percentage, placing him 5th among active D2 coaches. In 2007-08, Northern finished the season with an overall record of 29-4 and advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to Winona State.

Northern State plays in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (www.northernsun.org) which is comprised of ten teams from Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska. Northern State will play each team twice, home and away. The 18 game conference schedule usually starts in December. League games on typically Fridays and Saturdays and often piggybacked with the women. The farthest conference away game is at Winona State some 475 miles from campus. The season concludes with the Northern Sun tourney which includes all eight teams with the winner receiving a berth in the NCAA tourney.
