Head coach Dave Bezold completed his 4th year at Northern Kentucky in 2007-08. Bezold took over for Ken Shields who guided the Norse for the previous 16 seasons and brought the program great success. Bezold, who served under Shields for 14 seasons, gets a lot of the credit. In the mid-90's the men's program caught fire, and through 2003-04, the Norse averaged 23 wins per year and made six NCAA appearances including two appearances in the championship finals. Bezold is a 1984 graduate of Covington Holy Cross High School where he earned three letters in basketball. In 2004-05, Bezold's inaugural season, the Norse finished at 14-15, the program's first losing season since 1994. Things turned around for Bezold in 2005-06 and even more in 2006-07 with the Norse going 24-9. In 2007-08, the Norse went 21-8 and made a second round appearance in the NCAA tourney, losing to Grand Valley.

Northern Kentucky plays in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (www.glvcsports.com). The GLVC is one of the premier D2 conferences. The GLVC is comprised of 14 teams in five states. The league is split into two divisions. NKU competes in the east. The Norse will play each team in its division twice and each team from the other division once for a total of 19 games. NKU may begin playing conference opponents in late November or early December but only consistently after January 1. Each opponent is played twice, home and away, with games often played on Thursdays and Saturdays. It is common for league games to be piggybacked with the women's. The season concludes with the GLVC tourney which takes the top eight teams with the winner receiving an automatic NCAA berth.
