Founded in 1884 as a teacher preparaton college, Northwestern State is the oldest university under the U. of Louisana system. NSU offers over 40 Bachelor degree progams and about 20 Masters -- most of which are related to Education. About two-thirds of those enrolled are women. Other majors offered include Family & Consumer Sciences, Journalism, Photography, Physical Education Teaching and Coaching, and Nursing. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Northwestern State in the fourth tier among universities in the south offering a Master's degree.

The campus is located in Natchitoches (pop.17k) about 175 miles east of Dallas. The City of Natchitoches is the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana.

Jennifer Graf enters her 4th season in 2007-08 after serving as James Smith's top assistant for four years - on the heels of a four year playing career for Northwestern -- and was recommended by Smith for the top job. As the second youngest coach in major college women's basketball, the 29 year old Graf hopes to replicate the outstanding performance of her former coach and mentor who in 17 seasons guided the Lady Demons to 340-155 record while averaging 20 wins per season. In her four years as an assistant, Northwestern was 86-32. In 2004-05, Graf's inaugural season, the Lady Demons posted a 16-11 record, however, the 2005-06 season was not kind to her (11-16) nor was the 2006-07 season (10-20).

Conference and Schedule

Northwestern State plays in the Southland Conference (www.southland.org) which is made up of 12 teams from Texas, Arkansas, and Louisana. Currently, Northwestern plays a 16 game schedule with conference play getting underway in January. Northwestern will play six teams twice, home and away, and four teams once.
