Northwest Missouri State was founded in 1905 as a teacher's college. Today, it offers a wide choice of majors with more than 70 Bachelor degrees and 30 Master's. Majors offered include Agricultural Business Operations, Broadcast Journalism, Clinical Laboratory Science, Ecology, Fashion Merchandising, Parks, Recreation & Leisure Facilities Management, and Zoology. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Northwest Missouri State in the third tier among universities in the midwest offering a Master's degree. Head coach Steve Tappmeyer completed his 18th season at Northwest Missouri State in 2007-08. Tappmeyer served as an assistant at Northwest from 1981 through 1985 before becoming head coach at East Central Junior College where he compiled a 61-35 record. Tappmeyer returned to Northwest in 1989-90, inheriting a strong winning program. He produced several good but not great seasons before getting his act together in the late 90s. In 2001-02, he turned in the program's best season ever going 29-3 and making it all the way to the Elite 8. Tappmeyer has become Northwest's winningest coach, guiding the Bearcats to nine NCAA tournament appearances, including eight in the last ten years. In 2007-08, the Bearcats finished at 24-8 and advanced to the NCAA second round before losing to Central Oklahoma.

Northwest Missouri plays in the Mid America Intercollegiate Conference (www.themiaa.com) which has gained the reputation of being one of the top D2 conferences in the nation. The conference is comprised of ten teams from Missouri and Kansas. The Bearcats will play each team twice, home and away, for a total of 18 games. League play starts in January and games are often played on Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoon. Many games are piggybacked with the women's. The season concludes with the MIAA tournament which takes the top eight teams with the winner receiving an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
Central Misouri State, Emporia State, Missouri Southern State, Southwest Baptist, Missouri Western, Pittsburg State, Truman State, Fort Hays, and Washburn State.
