Head coach Larry Gipson completed his 11th season at Northeastern State in 2007-08. Gipson inherited a mediocre program in 1997-98 that had barely reached a .500 won-loss level over the life of the program. Though Gipson had a losing season his first year, he proceeed to roll off six consecutive winning seasons that included five first place conference finishes. Most importantly, he collected a national championship in 2003 when the Redmen posted a 32-3 record. It was the university's first D2 title in any sport and the first for the basketball program in 67 years. Over four seasons - 2000 through 2003 - Gipson went a combined 107-17. In 2003 he was named the NABC Coach of the Year. Prior to arriving at Northeastern State, Gipson coached at Oklahoma A&M and the University of Toledo. The last four years have been disappointing but the Redmen did manage to go .500 in 2007-08 (14-14) and improvement over the last three years.

Northeastern State plays in the Lone Star Conference (www.lonestarconference.org). The conference is comprised of 14 teams spread over three states (Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma) and is split into two divisions, north and south. Northeastern State plays in the north. The LSC is among the most respected D2 conferences. Currently, conference play can start in early December and generally includes teams from the south division. However, cross divisional games do not count in the conference standings. The Redmen will play each team twice in its own division beginning in January with league games typically played on Thursday and Saturday evenings. Games are usually piggybacked with the women's. The season concludes with the LSC tourney which takes the top four teams in each division with the eventual winner receiving an NCAA bid.
