Founded in 1951, Mount Olive is a liberal arts college affiliated with the Baptist church. It offers over 40 majors including Criminal Justice, Education, Nursing, Human Resources Management, Religion and Business. Business is the most popular major with 60% of the student body declaring it as their major. Head coach Joey Higginbotham begins his first season at Mount Olive in 2008-09. Higginbotham takes over from his mentor, Bill Clingan, who compiled a 325-195 record over the previous 18 seasons. Higginbotham has been part of the men's program since 1996 when he was the Trojan's starting point guard as a freshman. He became an assistant coach in 2000. In 2007-08, the Trojans went 24-7, the program's fifth consecutive season with 20 or more wins and fifth straight NCAA appearance, losing to Pittsburg-Johnstown in the first round of the NCAA tourney.

Mount Olive plays in the Carolinas-Virginia Conference (www.cvac.net) which is comprised of 11 religious-based schools from South Carolina and North Carolina. The Lady Trojans will play each team twice, home and away, and most games are piggybacked with the men's. Games are often played on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The season concludes with the CVAC which includes all teams with first round byes for the top five. The winner receives an automatic NCAA bid.
