Founded in 1893, the University of Montana is a member of the state university system. Montana ranks 17th in the nation among public universities in producing Rhodes Scholars. It has seven professional schools: business, education, fine arts, forestry, journalism, law, pharmacy and health sciences. Montana offers over 50 Bachelor and Master degree programs and 10 doctroral degrees including those in forestry, education, and psychology. Other majors offered include Drawing, Parks, Recreation & Leisure Facilities Management, and Physical Education Teaching and Coaching. US News 2008 report on Amercia's Best Colleges ranked Montana in the third tier among national institutions. The campus is located in Missoula (pop. 57k) which is situated in western Montana, 100 miles east of the state capitol, Helena. Head coach Robin Selvig enters his 30th season at Montana in 2007-08. Among active D1 coaches, he ranks 6th in winning percentage. Montana's all-time winningest coach, Selvig picked up his 600th win in 2003-04. Selvig played at Montana in the early 70's and won the most outstanding defensive player award. Upon graduation, Selvig coached at the high school level before coming to Montana in 1978. During the 1990's, Selvig teams placed first in the conference and made an NCAA appearance every year except for two. Montana has dominated the Big Sky Conference since its inception in 1982 and consistently ranks among the highest in attendance among D1 women's programs. In the past 24 years, he has made 20 post season appearances. Selvig has been named conference coach-of-the-year fourteen times. In 2006-07, the Lady Grizzlies finished at 27-4 but had to settle for a WNIT bid where they lost in the first round to Utah.

Montana belongs to the Big Sky conference (www.bigskyconf.com) which is comprised of nine teams from eight western states. The women's program is the most successful in the Big Sky. Currently, Montana plays a 16 game schedule with league play starting in early January with games often played on Thursday and Saturday evenings. Montana will play each team twice, home and away. The farthest conference away game is at Northern Arizona, some 800 miles from campus. The season concludes with the Big Sky tourney which takes the top six teams with the top two receiving first round byes. Tourney winner is an automatic qualifier for the NCAA tourney.
