The University of Minnesota-Duluth is a comprehensive regional university that was initially established as a teacher's college. Today, undergraduates can choose from over 60 Bachelor degrees and 17 Master's. Majors offered include American Indian/Native American Studies, Child Development, Theatre Arts and Stagecraft, Environmental Science, International Relations, Parks, Recreation and Leisure Studies, and Physical Education Teaching and Coaching. Head coach Tanya Bauer enters her first season in 2007-08. This will be Bauer's first head coaching job. Bauer takes over the top spot after two one year stints each by coaches David Stromme and Sue Fiero. Bauer served as the top assistant at Santa Clara University for the past four years, helping guide the Broncos to a West Coast Conference Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004-05. Prior to Santa Clara, Bauer assisted at Drake University under Lisa Stone from 2000 to 2003. The 1998 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire capped off a four-year playing career by garnering Kodak NCAA Division III All-America honorable mention recognition in 1998. In 2006-07, the Bulldogs finished with a 15-11 mark.

Minnesota-Duluth plays in the North Central Conference (www.northcentralconference.org). Several members have moved out of the NCC which will certainly lessen its status as one of the most competitive D2 conferences in the nation. The conference is now comprised of seven teams from four states. League play, consisting of 12 games, begins in January. Conference play is generally on Thursday or Friday evening and Saturday afternoon with games piggybacked with the men's. The season concludes with the NCC tourney which includes all seven teams with first round byes for the top seeds. The winner receives an automatic NCAA bid.
Augustana, St. Cloud State, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska-Omaha, and Minnesota State-Mankato. North Dakota announced in the summer of 2006 that they will reclassify their athletic programs to Division I. They will leave the conference after 2007-08.
