Founded in 1901, Millikin (or MU) is a small comprehensive university that has three professional schools and one for the liberal arts and sciences, where programs in classical music vie in excellence with those in accounting and the health sciences. The school offers more than 50 majors, minors and special programs and is ranked by U.S. News among the best undergraduate degree, comprehensive universities in Illinois. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Millikin in the third tier among liberal arts institutions. The campus is located in Decatur (pop 81k) about 120 miles north of St. Louis. Head Coach Lori Kerans completed her 22nd season at Millikin in 2007-08. In her 22 years, Keran's teams have come in first or tied for the conference title eleven times and made eleven NCAA appearances. Kerans has won 20 or more games in 12 of the last 15 seasons. Her 2004-05 team captured the national D3 championship. Millikin's all-time winningest coach, Lori has had only one losing season and her winning percentage of .753 ranks her among the top 25 active D3 coaches. A 1985 graduate of Millikin, Kerans was a four-year basketball player and was voted team MVP her senior year. The Big Blue went 20-7 in 2007-08 but did not earn an NCAA bid.

Millikin plays in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (www.cciw.org.index) which is comprised of eight schools. The CCIW is generally considered one of the more competitive D3 conferences. League plays commences in early January. Millikin will play each team twice, home and away. Games are often played on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The farthest confernce game is at Carthage, some 230 miles from campus. The conference winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The season concludes with the CCIW tourament with the winner receiving an automatic berth in the NCAA tourney.
