Head coach Suzy Merchant enters her first season in 2007-08. Merchant takes over from Joanne McCallie who led the Spartans to a 149-75 record in seven seasons, including four staight 20+ winning seasons. Merchant spent the past nine years as the head coach at Eastern Michigan and was the winningest coach in school history. During her tenure with the Eagles, Merchant guided Eastern Michigan to a record of 147-91 (.618), including three 20-win seasons. Before coaching at Eastern Michigan, Merchant spent three seasons at Saginaw Valley State. Merchant was a four-year starter and three-year captain at Central Michigan. In 2006-07, the Spartans had their fourth staight 20+ winning season - a program first - with a 24-9 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tourney before losing to Rutgers.

Michigan State plays in the Big 10 (www.big10.org) one of the most highly regarded D1 conferences in the nation. The conference includes 10 schools from seven states. Michigan State plays a 16 game schedule beginning in January with games typically played on Tuesday or Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoon. Michigan State will play six teams twice, home and away, and four teams once. The season concludes with the Big 10 tournament. All 11 teams participate. The bracket will be seeded according to the final regular-season standings with the league champion earning the top seed and the top five finishers receiving first-round byes. Tourney winner is an automatic NCAA qualifier.
