Michigan's largest university, MSU is ranked among the best research universities and is home to four national research facilties. Head Coach Tom Izzo completed his 13th year at Michigan State in 2007-08. Izzo inherited a program from Jud Heathcoate in 1995-96 that had already gained recognition as one of the best programs in the nation. A former alum and player at Northern Mighigan, Izzo coached at the high school level before coming on as an assistant at MSU in 1983. In 1990, Izzo was promoted to associate head coach. Izzo, who walked on as a player at Northern Michigan and was named MVP his senior year, is a highly regarded recruiter and top defensive expert. In 2007-08, the Spartans went 27-9 and earned their 11th straight trip to the NCAA tournament, but lost in the Sweet 16 to Memphis.

Michigan State plays in the Big 10 (www.bigten.org) one of the most highly regarded D1 conferences in the nation. The Big Ten, which is the oldest D1 conference, includes 11 schools from seven states. Michigan State plays a 16 game schedule beginning in January with games typically played on Tuesday or Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoon. Michigan State will play six teams twice, home and away, and four teams once. The season concludes with the Big 10 tournament. All 11 teams participate. The bracket will be seeded according to the final regular-season standings with the League champion earning the top seed and the top five finishers receiving first-round byes. Tourney winner is an automatic qualifier.
