Head coach Brannon Hays completed his second season in 2007-08. Hays took over from Mike Dunlap in 2006-07. Hays, who was an assistant under Dunlap has big shoes to fill. Among D2 programs profiled at CBSAguide, Metro sports the 6th best winning percentage over the last eight years -- all attributable to Dunlap. In fact, under Dunlap Metro State averaged nearly 28 wins per season, leading the Roadrunners to two national championships (2000 and 2002) four conference tourney titles, and ten straight NCAA appearances. Prior to his return to Metro State, Hays spent five seasons as the head coach at Colorado Christian and prior to that served three years as an assistant under Dunlap. Hays played college basketball at Cal Lutheran under Dunlap. In 2006-07, Hays' inaugural season, he led the Roadrunners to a 28-4 mark. In 2007-08 he went 19-12.

Metro State plays in the highly regarded Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (www.rmacsports.org). Among schools in the RMAC, Metro is by far the biggest. The RMAC is comprised of 14 teams from Colorado, Nebraska, and New Mexico, It is split into two divisions, east and west. Metro State plays in the east. Metro will play each team in its own division twice, the other division once. Conference play can begin in December but same division games don't begin until January. Conference games are usually played on Saturdays plus one mid-week game (Wed or Friday) and are often piggybacked with the women's. The season concludes with the RMAC tourney which takes the top eight teams and the two division winners getting the top seeds. Tourney winner receives automatic NCAA berth.
