Head coach John Calipari completed his 8th season at Memphis in 2007-08. Calipari joined the Tigers in 2000-01 after working the previous season as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers and 2+ seasons as the head coach of the New Jersey Nets. Inheriting a team with losing records in the previous two seasons, Calipari wasted no time turning the program around, picking up 21 wins in 2001, making the NIT, and breaking the attendance record. In his second season he won 27 games - the most since 1985 - and won the NIT championship. During his short tenure, the Tigers have won 20+ games every year. Prior to the NBA, Calipari coached eight years at UMASS, reviving a dormant program that had suffered through 10 consecutive losing seasons, and making it into a perrenial contender. Calipari was the starting point guard at Clarion State and got his first coaching assignment at Kansas under Ted Owens. In 2007-08, the Tigers went 38-2 and advanced to the NCAA championship game before falling to Kansas.
