Head coach Ron Holmes completed his 18th season at McMurry in 2007-08. Up until 2008, Holmes had put together fourteen winning seasons in a row, the longest in school history. Holmes replaced the legendary Hershel Kimbell and is just the second head coach since the program started. During his tenure, Holmes has led his teams to seven first place conference finishes and two NCAA appearances. Holmes played for McMurry from 1973-1977 and then coached at the high school level before coming to McMurry in 1990-91. McMurry went 20-7 in 2006-07 but did not receive an NCAA bid. It was the ninth time in school history that the program reached the 20-win plateau for a season, and it was the sixth time under Holmes. In 2007-08, McMurry had an uncharacteristic 12-13 season.

McMurry plays in the American Southwest Conference (www.americansouthwestconf.org) which is comprised of 15 schools from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. The ASC is split into two divisons. McMurry plays in the Western division. McMurry will play each team in the West twice and each school from the East once, however, only those games played against western division opponents count in the standings. League play can start in late Novemver or early December though non-league opponents are scheduled in until January. Conference games are usually piggyback with the women's and played on Thursdays and Saturdays. The farthest conference away game is at Mississippi College (Clinton, MS) some 550 miles from campus. The season concludes with the ASC tourney which includes the top four teams from each division with initial bracketing pitting east v. west. The eventual winner is an automatic qualifier to the NCAA tourney.
