Tracing its roots back to 1895, UMASS-Dartmouth was origially established as a textile school. As the regional economy evolved, so did the school. In 1991, Southeastern Massachusetts University, as it was called, became part of the five campus UMASS system. It offers nearly 50 Bachelor degree programs and over 20 Master's. Majors offered include Ceramic Arts, Computer and Information Sciences, Criminal Justice, Film/Cinema Studies, Marine Biology, and Photography. US News 2005 report on America's Best Colleges ranked UMASS-Dartmouth #62 among universities in the north. UMD's main campus is on 710 wooded acres in Dartmouth (pop. 31k) about 50 miles from Boston. The university's coastal location grants easy access to Providence, Boston, Newport, Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Head coach Brian Baptiste enters his 25th season at UMASS Dartmouth in 2007-08, after picking up his 400th victory in 2004. With a .692 winning percentage over the last two decades, Baptiste's teams have earned a reputation as among the best D3 teams in the nation. Over the last 25 years, the Corsairs have captured 12 conference championships and made 11 NCAA appearances. During the 1990's, the Corsairs averaged 20 wins per year and over the last eight years, have finished first in conference play five times. Beginning with 2004-05, Baptiste suffered through three consecutive 13-14 seasons, however, things improved greatly in 2007-08 with the Corsairs going 25-4.

UMASS Dartmouth plays in the Little East Conference (www.littleeast.com) which is comprised of eight schools from four northeastern states. UMASS Dartmouth starts league play in December but schedules non-conference opponents until January. Teams play each other twice, home and away, for a total of 14 games which are often played on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The season concludes with the LEC tourney which takes all eight teams with the top four receiving first round byes. The winner receives an automatic NCAA berth.
Eastern Connecticut State, Keene State, Plymouth State, Rhode Island College, UMASS-Boston, Southern Maine, and Western Connecticut State.
