Founded in 1893, UM-Western began as Montana State Normal College with about two hundred students. Over a century later, the campus of The University of Montana - Western (formerly Western Montana) has just fewer than 1,200 students and an average class size of 18 students. Majors offered in include Environmental Science, Business, Early Childhood Education, and Equine, US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Montana Western in the third tier among universities in the west offering a Bachelor's degree. The 34 acre campus is located in Dillon (pop. 5k) about one hour south of Butte, Montana. Six beautiful mountain ranges, many rivers and streams full of great fishing, and 3.5 million acres of National Forest surround Dillon. Montana Western uses a block schedule referred to as 'Experience One' whereby each student takes one class at a time for 18 days. Head coach Kevin Engellant completed his 12th season at Montana Western in 2007-08. Engellant came to MW in 1996-97, inheriting a program that had not had a winning season in the previous five years. Though Engellant did no better his first three seasons, he caught fire in 1999-00, leading the Lady Bulldogs to a 22-8 record. Over the last eight seasons Engellant has compiled a sizzling .762 winning percentage while averaging 25 wins per year. Engellant is a 1986 graduate of Geraldine High School and a 1991 graduate of Western Montana. He spent five years, two as an assistant and three as head girl’s basketball coach, at Beaverhead County High School. Coming off a 26-6 record in 2006-07, the Lady Bulldogs posted a 18-13 record in 2007-08 but did not get an NAIA bid, breaking a string of eight consecutive tourney appearances.

Montana Western is a member of the Frontier Conference which is comprised of eight teams from Montana, Idaho, and Utah. Montana Western plays each team twice, home and away. Games are often played on Thursdays and Saturdays. The season concludes with the Frontier tourney which includes all eight teams.
