Head coach Rocky Lamar completed his 22nd season in 2007-08 at Mid-America Nazarene. Since Lamar took over, Mid-America Nazarene has been a mainstay in the top 20 among NAIA II schools. Only twice has MNU not been ranked among the the top 25. Lamar, MNU's all-time winningest coach, took over a program in 1987 that had had only six winning seasons since 1969 and never experienced a 20 win season. During the 1990s, the Pioneers posted a 237-126 (.652) record, had nine 20+ win seasons, won six conference titles, and entered post season play eight times. In 2007-08, the Pioneers improved upon last year's outstanding record (29-2) by finishing 31-5 and making it to the Final Four before being upended by College of the Ozarks.

MNU plays in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (www.haaconference.org) which is comprised of 11 small schools from Kansas, Iowa, and Missouri. The conference is generally regarded as one of the strongest at the NAIA II level. League play, which consists of 20 games, begins in early December. Conference games are often played on Thursday and Saturday evenings. MNU will play each team twice, home and away. The season concludes with the HAAC conference tournament, made up of the top eight teams in the conference standings. The tournament champion gets the conference’s first automatic berth into the NAIA II national tournament. The conference’s second automatic berth is filled by either the No. 1 or No. 2 in the final standings – depending on the outcome of the tournament.
