Luther College is a private, selective, four-year liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and was founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants. It confers the Bachelor of Arts degree in more than 60 majors. Luther is arguably most famous for its music program, which has acquired international recognition. Head coach Jane Hildreband completed her 25th season at Luther in 2007-08. Hildebrand ranks 22nd nationally in career wins among active D3 coaches and has won the Iowa Conference Coach of the Year award five times. She has led the Norse to 21 consecutive winning seasons, nine NCAA tournament appearances, and seven conference champiosnhips. Luther is typically one of the stronger teams in its conference. In 2007-08, Hildebrand led the Norse to a 15-10 mark.

Luther plays in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (www.iowaconference.com) which is comprised of nine private institutions. The conference season can start in late November or early December though non-league opponents are played up until January. Luther will play each team twice, home and away. Games are often played on Tuesday and/or Friday evenings and Saturday afternoon. Games are commonly piggybacked with the men's. The season concludes with the IIAC conference which includes all schools. Top seeds host in a single elimination format (no byes) with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA tourney.

Hildebrand plays an up-tempo style, taking advantage of the fast break and pressure defense over the entire floor. In 2006-07, Luther was ranked #13 in scoring defense, limiting opponents to 51.7 ppg.
