Head coach Rick Pitino completed his 7th season at Louisville in 2007-08. Inheriting a 12-19 team at the conclusion of the 2000-01 season, Pitino guided an undersized team to a 19-13 record in 2001-02, earning an NIT appearance. Louisville, steeped in basketball tradition, has made 34 trips to the NCAA tourney, which stands 6th in all-time appearances behind Kentucky, UCLA, North Carolina, Indiana, and Kansas. The program's all time won-loss record is a stellar 1569-832. During the 1980s, Louisville was generally regarded as the best D1 team - winning two national championships. Getting Pitino was a major coup. Among active D1 coaches Pitino has the 12th best winning percentage. Prior to coming to Louisville in 2001-02, Pitino served as president and head coach of the Boston Celtics and before that, guided Kentucky for eight seasons, amassing a 219-50 record. In 2007-08, the Cardinals went 27-9 but lost in the NCAA Elite 8 to North Carolina.

Louisville plays in the Big East (www.bigeast.org) which is now comprised of 17 teams. The Big East currently represents the majority of the large, athletically competitive private Catholic schools. League play, which consists of 16 games, starts after the first of the year. Louisville will play three opponents twice, 10 once, and 3 none at all. (This will change in 2007-08; Big East teams will play everyone once and three teams twice.) League games are usually played on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The season concludes with the Big East tourney with the winner being an automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.
