Lawrence University is a nationally recognized liberal arts school with many (16%) declaring music as their major. Chartered in 1847, Lawrence offers such degrees as Anthropology, East Asian Studies, Journalism and International Studies. Lawrence also has a cooperative degree program with other colleges where students can earn degrees in Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Foresty and Engineering. Students are encouraged to spend at least one quarter in an overseas program. US News 2008 Report on America's Best Colleges ranked Lawrence #56 among liberal arts institutions nationwide. Head coach Joel DePagter completed his first season in 2007-08. DePatger took over from over from John Tharp. Tharp brought the program back to respectability and then some producing a 204-108 record over 14 seasons. DePagter, who also serves as Lawrence's golf coach, played three seasons at Lawrence and led the Vikings to the 1997 Midwest Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Vikings stumbled in 2006-07 going 13-10 but in De Pagter's inaugural season they went 22-3 and made a first round appearance in the NCAA tourney, losing to Wheaton.

Lawrence plays in the Midwest Conference (www.midwestconference.org) comprised of 10 members located in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Conference play can start in early December and then resume in January after a two week winter break. More often than not, league games are played on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Currently, Lawrence plays all but two teams twice, home and away. The season concludes with the top four teams competing in the Midwest Conference tourney with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA tourney.
