Johns Hopkins was established in 1876 and currently serves as a research university and teaching hospital. Though Johns Hopkins is the smallest research university in the nation, its faculty is among the most distinguished and receives more federal research grants than any other university in the United States. The academic program is extremely flexible as there are no university-wide core requirements; undergraduate students are expected to put their own programs together with help from faculty advisors. Johns Hopkins offers nearly 50 Bachelor, Masters, and PhD programs. Majors offered include Computer and Information Sciences, Geography, International Relations, and Near and Middle Eastern Studies. US News 2008 Report on America's Best Colleges ranked Johns Hopkins #14 among national institutions. The campus is located just north of downtown Baltimore (pop.650k) School website College ProfileType:Private, Co-educationalReligious Affiliation:NoneEnrollment:3,900Getting In:Most Difficult. Head coach Nancy Funk completed her 22nd year at Johns Hopkins in 2007-08. Johns Hopkins' all-time winningest coach, Funk inherited a program in 1986-87 that had, up to that time, compiled a woeful .244 winning percentage. Funk has brought the program back to respectability since the mid 1990's. Over the last eight years, Funk's teams have averaged nearly 18 wins per season and made three NCAA appearances. Prior to joining Hopkins' staff, Funk directed the women's program at Messiah College (D3). Funk, a graduate of the University of Baltimore Law School, currently works for the federal government. In 2007-08, the Blue Jays finished with a 12-12 mark.

Johns Hopkins plays in the Centennial Conference (www.centennial.org) which is comprised of 11 teams from Maryland and Pennsylvania. Among D3 conferences, the Centennial would be considered average. Johns Hopkins is the all time winningest team in the Centennial. Conference play can start in late November or early December and there is generally a three week winter break before league play resumes in January. Hopkins will play most teams twice in an 18 game schedule. Game days during the week can vary but Saturday afternoon games are a tradition. The farthest conference away game is at Muhlenberg some 150 miles from campus. The season concludes with the Centennial tourney which takes the top five teams with the top seed getting a first round bye. Winner receives automatic NCAA berth.
