Head coach Tom Wood completed his 27th season at Humboldt State in 2007-08. Woods joined the program in 1981-82 after serving as an assistant at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo for eight seasons. Success for Woods has come late. In the seven years prior to 2001, Woods managed an unimpressive 83-101 mark. Since 2001, Woods has produced a 177-58 (.753) record (helped in part by a change in conferences) averaged 22 wins per season, and made seven NCAA appearances. Woods was a prep star at South Fork HS (Mirada, CA) and played collegiately at UC Davis. In 2007-08, the Lumberjacks went 20-9 but got beat in the first round of the NCAA tourney by Chaminade.

Humboldt plays in one of the most competitive D2 conferences in the nation, the California Collegiate Athletic Association(www.goccaa.org). The CCAA is comprised of 12 teams, all in California. League play commences in early December due to the high number of conference contests (22); the pre-season is relatively short. Opponents are played twice, home and away. Conference games are generally played on Friday and Saturday evenings. Currently, the CCAA does not offer an end-of-season conference tournament. The regular season conference champion receives and automatic berth in the NCAA tourney.
