Head coach Ron Cottrell completed his 17th year in 2007-08 at Houston Baptist. When Cottrell took over the program in 1991-92, it was dormant, taking a two year break from NCAA Division I competition prior to NAIA entry. He didn't have too much success at first during the rebuilding phase, posting a 38-58 record his first three seasons. However, over the last eight years Cottrell had led the Huskies to a 199-59 record, competed in eight NAIA national tournaments, and has been consistently ranked in the top 25. For his efforts over that period, Cottrell received conference coaching honors five times. Cottrell graduated from Houston's Westbury High School. He then attended the University of Arkansas where he was a volunteer coach for Nolan Richardson. In 2007-08, Cottrell led the Huskies to a 13-15 record, in its first season as a NCAA D1 provisional team.

Houston Baptist plays in the Red River Athletic Conference (www.redriverconference.com) which is comprised of 13 teams from Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. In terms of enrollment, HBU is the largest school in the conference. Conference play can begin in December and, more often than not, played on Monday or Thursday and Saturday evenings. HBU plays each team twice, home and away. The farthest conference away game is at Texas-Permian (Odessa, TX), an 11 hour bus ride from campus. The season concludes with the RRAC tourney which includes the top eight teams. Tournament champion receives the leagues second automatic NAIA berth. (The first berth goes to the regular season champ.)
