Founded in 1868, Holy Names University is a small, catholic liberal arts institution offering nearly 20 Bachelor degree programs and a dozen graduate degrees. Majors offered include Music, Family Practice Nurse/Nurse Practitioner, and Business. Steve Spencer completed his fourth year as head coach with HNU in 2007-08. Spencer took over from Dennis James who moved over to coach the men's team. While new to the position, Spencer is familiar with the program having served as the top assistant under Jones for five years. Under James, Holy Names won six consecutive Cal Pac championships and appeared in six straight NAIA tournament games, giving national acclaim to this small San Francisco Bay area college. Spencer spent the 2003-04 season as the head women's basketball coach at the University of California at Santa Cruz, a NCAA Division III Independent. In addition to his coaching duties, Spencer serves as the department's Director of Sports Information. Spencer played his college ball at Mendocino College in Ukiah, CA. In 2007-08, the Hawks went 19-14.

Holy Names plays in the California Pacific Conference or Cal Pac (www.calpacathletics.org) which is comprised of ten teams, all in California. Members include schools in the California State University system as well as religious and liberal arts colleges. Conference play begins in January after a two week break at Xmas. Holy Names will play each team twice, home and away. Games are typically played on Fridays and Saturdays and are piggybacked with the men's. The season concludes with the Cal Pac conference which . .
