Head coach Shanna Briggs completed her sixth season at Hardin-Simmons in 2007-08. The former HSU graduate, who had a record setting career as a player (1992-95), got her coaching start at the prep level (Decatur, Venus and Abilene HS). Briggs inherited an already successful program which had won four straight conference titles before she took over in 2002-03. In her inaugural season she led the Cowgirls to a 27-1 mark and has since rolled off six consecutive 20+ winning seasons, made four NCAA appearances, and been ranked 5x in the top 25. In 2007-08, Briggs led her team to 21-6 mark but did not earn an NCAA bid.

Hardin-Simmons competes in the American Southwest Conference (www.americansouthwestconf.org) or ASC which is comprised of 16 schools in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. The ASC is split into two divisons. HSU plays in the Western division. HSU will play each team in the West twice and each school from the East once, however, only those games played against western division opponents count in the standings. League play can start in late November or early December though non-league opponents are scheduled in until January. Conference games are usually piggyback with the men's and played on Thursdays and Saturdays. The season concludes with the ASC tourney which includes the top four teams from each division with initial bracketing pitting east v. west. The eventual winner is an automatic qualifier to the NCAA tourney.
