Howard Payne competes in the American Southwest Conference (www.americansouthwestconf.org) or ASC which is comprised of 16 schools in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. The ASC is split into two divisons. HPU plays in the Western division. HPU will play each team in the West twice and each school from the East once, however, only those games played against western division opponents count in the standings. League play can start in late November or early December though non-league opponents are scheduled in until January. Conference games are usually piggyback with the men's and played on Thursdays and Saturdays. The season concludes with the ASC tourney which includes the top four teams from each division with initial bracketing pitting east v. west. The eventual winner is an automatic qualifier to the NCAA tourney.
