Founded in 1887 as a frontier boarding school for boys, Gonzaga University has since expanded from a single building above the Spokane River to a 108 acre campus in a residential section of Spokane. The university offers over 50 Bachelor degrees, nearly 20 Master's, and doctoral programs in Education and Law. Other majors offered include Radio and Television, Public Relations, Kinesiology and Exercise Science, Theatre Arts, and Advertising. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Gonzaga 3rd among universities in the west offering a Master's degree. The 108 acre campus is located along the Spokane River in the city of Spokane (pop. 195k) near the Idaho border, about 200 miles east of Seattle. Head coach Mark Few completed his 9th season at Gonzaga in 2007-08. Joining the team in 1999-00, Few has continued Gonzaga's string of NCAA tourament appearances, leading the Zags to nine consecutive appearances including three Sweet 16's. A ten-year Gonzaga assistant coach, Few joined the Bulldog coaching staff in 1989 as a graduate assistant. (Prior to his arrival, Few was an assistant coach at Sheldon High in Eugene.) During his time with the Zags, the team has won or shared ten West Coast Conference championships, nine tourney titles, and made 12 post season appearances. In 2007-08, Gonzaga finished with an overall record of 25-8 but lost to Davidson in the first round of the NCAA tourney.

Gonzaga plays in the West Coast Conference (www.wccsports.com). The WCC is considered to be one of the better mid-major conferences. It consists of eight schools in California, Oregon, and Washington and all current members are private, religiously-affiliated institutions. League play starts after January 1. Gonzaga plays a 14 game schedule and will play each team twice, home and away. The season concludes with the WCC tourney which includes all eight teams. The #5 through #8 seeds will compete in the opening round to determine who will advance to the next round of the tournament. The #3 and #4 seeds have first round byes while the #1 and #2 seeds have first and second round byes. Tourney winner is an automatic qualifier.

In 2005-06, Gonzaga ranked #11 in scoring offense, averaging 80.1 ppg. In 2006-07, they were ranked 19th at 78.5 ppg.
