Founded in 1889, Georgia College and State University was originally a state teacher's college for women. GCSU is the state's only public liberal arts college. GCSU offers more than 40 Bachelor degrees and 30 Master's. In conjunction with the Air Force, GCSU is the only university in the country that offers a BA and MA in Logistics. Other majors offered include Physical Education Teaching and Coaching, Parks, Recreation and Leisure Studies, Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement Administration, and International Business. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked GCSU #38 among universities in the south offering a Master's degree. Head coach John Carrick enters his 25th season at Georgia College in 2007-08. Over his tenure, Carrick has produced 19 winning seasons (including eight with 20 or more wins), made five NCAA appearances, captured two conference championships, and garnered 406 career victories. Carrick, a GCSU alumni, started his coaching career at the high school level before coming to GCSU in 1983-84. Carrick played soccer and tennis at GCSU and was named male athlete of the year in 1974. In 2006-07, the Lady Bobcats finished with an overall record of 22-10 and advanced to the Sweet 16 before being eliminated by Clayton St.

Georgia College plays in the Peach Belt Athletic Conference (www.peachbelt.com) which is comprised of 12 teams from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Florida. The 20 game conference schedule usually starts in January. Each team is played home and away. League games are generally played on Monday and/or Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons and often piggybacked with the men's. The season concludes with the Peach Belt tourney which takes all teams with the top four receiving first round byes. The winner receives an automatic NCAA berth.
Augusta State, South Carolina-Aiken, Francis Marion, North Carolina-Pembroke, Lander, Columbus State, North Georgia, Armstrong Atlantic, South Carolina-Upstate, and Clayton State. (Note: Upstate leaves after the 2006-07 season.)
