Founded in 1821, George Washington is the largest college in the nation's captial. Formerly known as Columbian College, GW boasts over 70 Bachelor degree programs and over 100 Masters including Forensics, Museum Education, and Public Health. It also offers over 50 doctorate programs. The number of graduate students is twice that of undergraduates. Head coach Joe McKeown enters his 19th year at George Washington in 2007-08. GW's winningest coach, McKeown took over the program in 1989-90 that was, at the time, medicore at best. McKeown has put GW on the map and in the process made him one of the top 10 D1 coaches in terms of winning percentage (.737). Over the past 18 years McKeown has averaged 23 wins per year. McKeown came to GW with seven years of previous coaching experience, including three as head coach at New Mexico State where he produced at 68-20 record. McKeown played at Kent State where he earned All-Mid American Conference honors. In 2006-07, the Colonials went 28-4, placed first in their conference, and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tourney but were beaten by North Carolina.

George Washington plays in the Atlantic 10 Conference (www.atlantic10.org) which is comprised of 14 teams from six states and the District of Columbia. Although some of its members are state-funded, it is largely made up of private, Catholic institutions. Conference play begins in late December/early January with games usually played on Fridays and Sundays. The season concludes with the AC 10 tourney which takes all teams with the top two teams receiving first round byes. The winner is an automatic qualifier for the NCAA tourney.
