Head coach John Reilly completed his third season at Gannon in 2007-08. Reilly took over from Jerry Slocum who over 10 years produced a 179-78 record (.696) and captured three conference divisional titles and made four trips to the NCAA. Reilly spent the last 12 years as the head coach at Brescia University (NAIA), compiling a 232-145 record. Reilly began his coaching career at Gannon as a graduate assistant and then later as an assistant coach. Reilly played basketball at Bowie High and played collegiately for two years at Bowie State University. Reilly's first two seasons was not in keeping with the program's successful past, posting losing records in each. However, in 2007-08, things turned around dramatically as Reilly produced a 26-5 record and advanced to the NCAA second round before getting beat by Findlay.

Gannon plays in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (www.gliac.org), the premier D2 conference in the midwest. The GLIAC is comprised of 13 schools from Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. The conference is divided into two divisions, north and south. Gannon plays in the South. Gannon will play each team in the south division twice, and once in the north. Conference play can start in early December but the schedule includes non-conference opponents until January. Conference games are usually played on Thursdays and Saturdays and are often piggybacked with the women's. The season concludes with the GLIAC conference which takes the top four teams from each division with crossover play starting in the semi-finals. The winner receives an automatic NCAA berth.
