Founded in 1958, the Florida Institute of Technology was originally formed to provide continuing education to those working at the Space Center. Now, Florida Tech offers a wide range curriculum that has over 40 Bachelor and Master degree programs while maintaining its concentration in the engineering and sciences fields. It also offers about 20 doctoral degees. The school of Aeronautics is one of the best in the nation. Its industrial/organizational psychology program is also highly regarded. About 70% of the student body is male. Other majors offered include Oceanography, Marine Biology, Human Resources Management, and Airline/Commercial/Professional Pilot/Flight Crew. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Florida Tech in the third tier among national institutions.

The campus is located on the coast, in Melbourne, Fla. (pop. 71k) on 130 tropical acres, including a picturesque botanical garden. The campus is 5 minutes from the Indian River, 10 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean and 50 minutes from Kennedy Space Center.

Head coach John Reynolds enters his 20th season at Florida Tech in 2007-08. Reynolds took over the women's program in 1987-88, one year after the program's inaugural season which produced a 5-19 record. Since his arrival, Reynolds has vaulted the program onto the national scene. Over the last 19 years he as averaged 20 wins per season. For his career he has led the Panthers to six SSC regular-season championships, five SSC postseason tournament championships and eight NCAA appearances. In 2006-07, the Panthers went 23-7 while losing in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Delta State.

Conference and Schedule

Florida Tech plays in the Sunshine State Conference (www.ssconference.org) which is comprised of nine schools, all in Florida. Conference play starts in January. The 16 game schedule provides for playing each team twice, home and away. Games are typically played on Wednesday and Saturday evenings and are piggybacked with the men's. The season concludes with the Sunshine State Tourney which takes all nine teams with the winner receiving an automatic NCAA berth.
