Founded in 1902, Fort Hays State offers more than 30 Bachelor and 20 Master degree programs. Head coach Mark Johnson completed his 7th season at Fort Hays in 2007-08. In the last 25 years the program has only had three losing seasons and over the last 8 years has averaged 20 wins per season. In 1996 the Tigers claimed the National Championship. Johnson took over the program in 2001-02 after serving as the program's assistant since 1996. In his first two seasons, Johnson had back-to-back 20+ winning seasons. A former player at Pittsburg St, Johnson earned conference honors as a senior. Prior to his arrival at FHSU, Johnson coached at Labette Community College and Phillips University. In 2006-07 the Tigers managed only 13 wins but improved upon that in 2008, going 19-11 and making a first round NCAA appearance, losing to Central Oklahoma.

After playing in the highly regarded Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Fort Hays has moved over to equally tough Mid America conference. The MIAA (www.themiaa.com) conference is comprised of ten teams from Missouri and Kansas. Fort Hays will play each team twice, home and away, for a total of 18 games. League play starts in January and games are often played on Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoon. Many games are piggybacked with the women's. The season concludes with the MIAA tournament which takes the top eight teams with the winner receiving an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
Central Misouri State, Emporia State, Missouri Southern State, Southwest Baptist, Northwest Missouri State, Pittsburg State, Truman State, Missouri Western, and Washburn.
