It is rare that CBSAguide profiles a team that does not meet its criteria for inclusion. However, Florida Gulf Coast is an exception. Head coach Karl Smesko enters his 6th season in 2007-08. Smesko was asked to initiate the women's program in 2002-03 after having successfully resurrected two other programs, Walsh and Indiana-Purdue/Ft. Wayne. At Walsh, he led the Cavaliers to the NAIA II National Championship in 1998. Career-wise, Smesko has a 193-48 winning record. In his inaugural season at FGCU - albeit on an independent schedule - he went 30-1. In five years he has averaged 26 wins per season while making two NCAA appearances. In 2006-07, he led the Eagles to a 34-1 record, losing to Southern Connecticut in the D2 championship game. The Eagles were also ranked #1 among all D2 schools and #5 and #2 in offensive and defensive scoring respectively. FGCU will play D1 in 2007-08 for the Atlantic Sun Conference.
