Founded in 1889, Eastern Connecticut is the second oldest state university. ECSU offers nearly 30 Bachelor degree programs and Masters in nine. Majors offered include Earth and Planetary Sciences, Sport and Fitness Administration, and Early Childhood Education and Teaching. The Institute for Sustainable Energy was opened in 2001. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Eastern Connecticut in the third tier among universities in the north offering a Master's degree. The campus is located in the heart of eastern Connecticut, in residential Willimantic (pop. 16k). The university is located midway between New York and Boston, about 100 miles away. Head coach Denise Bierly completed her 14th season at Eastern Connecticut in 2007-08. When Bierly arrived on the scene in 1994-95, the program that had come off a 3-22 season but had a history of great success. From 1985-86 through 1991-92, the program averaged 20 wins per season. Though Bierly struggled her first season, she has returned the Warriors to their accustomed spot as one of the top programs in New England. In the past seven years, Bierly has engineered four trips to the NCAA tournament. Bierly was a former standout at Defiance (D3) where in her senior season was named conference player of the year. Prior to accepting her first head coaching position at ECSU, Bierly was an assistant coach at D3 powerhouse Capital for three seasons. In 2002-03, Bierly's team advanced to the final round of the NCAA tourney. The Warriors finished with a 24-5 mark in 2007-08 and lost in the first round of the NCAA tourney to Rochester.

Eastern Connecticut plays in the Little East Conference which is comprised of eight teams from six New England states. Conference play can usually commence in early December. There is a 2-3 week winter break before league play resumes in January. League games are typically played on Tuesday and/or Thursday evening and Saturday afternoons and are piggybacked with the men's. ECSU plays each team twice, home and away, for a total of 14 games. The farthest conference away game is at Southern Maine some 180 miles from campus. The season concludes with the LEC tourney which takes includes all eight teams with the top four receiving first round byes. The winner receives an automatic NCAA berth.
