Head coach Doug Branson took over from Herb Greene begins his second season in 2007-08. Greene, who completed his 25th and final season at Columbus State in 2005-06, was the school's all-time leader in wins. Greene averaged nearly 20 wins per season and amassed a 487-261 all-time record. Branson has been with the CSU program for eight years, six of those as a full-time assistant coach under Greene. Branson attended Troy State University and played at the school from 1991-1993 as a guard. His college playing career was cut short by a series of injuries, leading to a career in coaching. Coming off a 23-9 record in 2005-06 and a first place conference finish, Branson led the Cougars to a 17-12 mark in 2006-07 but did not receive an NCAA bid, breaking a string of four straight NCAA appearances.
