Founded in 1851, and fomerly known as the Christian Female College, Columbia College assumed its current name in 1970. Columbia College is a liberal arts institution offering nearly 30 Bachelor degree programs and Masters in Criminal Justice, Business, and Education. A high percentage of students are business majors and over 60% are female. Other majors offered include Pre-Veterinary Studies, Forensic Science and Technology, and Athletic Training and Sports Medicine. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Columbia #44 among universities in the midwest offering a Master's degree. The campus is located in the college town of Columbia (pop.85k) about 100 miles east of Kansa City. Head coach Bob Burchard completed his 20th year at Columbia in 2007-08. The Cougar's winningest coach, Burchard has compiled a .731 winning record, averaging 25 wins per season. Prior to his arrival in 1988-89, the program had experienced only one winning season since its inception in 1975. Under Burchard, the Cougars have had only one losing season. During the decade of the 90's , the Cougars went 253-92, advanced to post season play ten times, and made seven NAIA tournament appearances. Burchard came to Columbia after spending seven seasons as an assistant coach at Missouri Western State (D2). After a disappointing 15-15 record in 2006-07, the Cougars went 25-9 in 2007-08 and made a first round NAIA tournament appearance; falling to Azusa Pacific.

Columbia plays in the American Midwest Conference (www.amermw.org) which is comprised of nine teams from Arkansas, Illinois, and Missouri. In terms of enrollment, Columbia is the largest. Conference play can start in mid-January after a two week break at Xmas. Columbia plays a 12 game schedule and more often than not, conference games are played on Thursdays and Saturdays. Columbia will play each team twice, home and away.
Missouri Baptist, Harris-Stowe, Hannibal-LaGrange, Williams Baptist, William Woods, U. Illinois-Springfield, Stephens College, and McKendree.
