Head coach Mick Cronin begins his second season in 2007-08. Cronin took over from Andy Kennedy in 2006-07. (Kennedy served in an interim capacity in 2005-06, taking over from Bob Huggins who was asked to resign.) Cronin has a tough act to follow. Huggin's teams won over 20 games in all but four of his 22 years as a head coach. During the 90's, the Bearcats averaged 25 wins per season and made nine post season appearances. Cronin is widely-recognized as one of the nation's top up-and-coming coaches. He compiled a 69-23 record during his three seasons as head coach at Murray State. Cronin comes back to UC where he began his coaching career in 1997-98 after being promoted from video coordinator to assistant coach. Cronin left UC to become associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Louisville in 2001-02 before hooking up with Murray State. Cronin earned all-city honors in basketball at LaSalle High where led the city in assists and was second in 3-point field goal percentage in 1989-90. In 2006-07, Cronin's inaugural seaon, the Bearcats went 11-19.

Cincinnati plays in the Big East (www.bigeast.org) which is now comprised of 17 teams. The Big East currently represents the majority of the large, athletically competitive private Catholic schools. League play, which consists of 16 games, starts after the first of the year. Cincinnati will play three opponents twice, 10 once, and 3 none at all. (This will change in 2007-08; Big East teams will play everyone once and three teams twice.) League games are usually played on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The season concludes with the Big East tourney with the winner being an automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.
