Founded in 1960, Christopher Newport was originally established as a two year branch of William and Mary University, becoming its own four year institution in 1971. CNU offers nearly 30 undergraduate degree programs and master's degree programs in Education, Applied Physics and Computer Science and Environmental Science. Majors offered include Psychology, Political Science, Biology, Fine and Performing Arts and Business among others. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Christopher Newport in the 4th tier among liberal arts institutions. However, the Washington Post recently called an 'undiscovered gem'.

The campus is located in Newport News (pop. 170k) about 150 miles from Washinton D.C.

With an average class size of 25, CNU feels like a private school but at a public school price.

Head coach Carolyn Hunter completed her 10th season in 2007-08. Arriving in 1998-99, Hunter inherited a successful program that had finished first or second in conference play 15 times in the previous 16 years. In her short tenure, Hunter has compiled a .665 winning percentage, captured first place in conference four times, and made four NCAA appearances. Hunter's coaching experience began at the University of Texas as a graduate assistant. From there she coached at the high school level before returning to UT as an assistant coach under the legendary Jody Conradt. In 2007-08, Hunter turned in a 21-7 mark but did not make an NCAA appearance.

Conference and Schedule

Christopher Newport plays in the USA South Athletic Conference (www.usasouth.net) - formerly the Dixie Conference - which is comprised of nine schools from North Carolina and Virginia. Conference play starts after January 1 with most games played on Wednesdays and Saturdays. CNU will play each team twice, home and away. The farthest conference away game is at Ferrum about 300 miles from campus. The season concludes with the USA South Tourney which includes all teams, regardless of record, with the winner receiving an automatic NCAA bid.

Conference Opponents

Shenandoah, Ferrum, Averett, NC Wesleyan, Greensboro, Peace, and Methodist. Note: Mary Baldwin and Shenandoah will join in 2007-08. Peace is an all-woman's college.
