Founded in 1960, Christopher Newport was originally established as a two year branch of William and Mary University, becoming its own four year institution in 1971. CNU offers nearly 30 undergraduate degree programs and master's degree programs in Education, Applied Physics and Computer Science and Environmental Science. Majors offered include Psychology, Political Science, Biology, Fine and Performing Arts and Business among others. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Christopher Newport in the 4th tier among liberal arts institutions. However, the Washington Post recently called an 'undiscovered gem'. The campus is located in Newport News (pop. 170k) about 150 miles from Washinton D.C. With an average class size of 25, CNU feels like a private school but at a public school price. Head coach CJ Woolum completed his 24th season at Christopher Newport in 2007-08. Over the last 24 seasons, Woollum has compiled a 469-199 record and his winning percentage of .702 ranks among the top 20 active D3 coaches. After posting a 13-14 season in his first year (1984-85), Woollum went 19-11 the following year and advanced to the NCAA tourney. Under Woolhum, the Captains have made 16 NCAA appearances. During the last 18 seasons, Woolum has produced 20+ winning seasons eleven times and dominated conference play. Over the last eight years, Christopher Newport has averaged 18 wins per season The Captains went 10-16 in 2007-08.

Christopher Newport plays in the USA South Athletic Conference (www.usasouth.net) - formerly the Dixie Conference - which is comprised of seven schools (for men's basketball) from North Carolina and Virginia. Conference play starts after January 1 with most games played on Wednesdays and Saturdays. CNU plays a 12 game schedule, playing each team twice, home and away. The farthest conference away game is at Ferrum about 300 miles from campus. The season concludes with the USA South Tourney which includes all teams, regardless of record, with the winner receiving an automatic NCAA bid.
