Founded in 1959, Cal Lutheran offers a traditional liberal arts curriculum with 30 undergraduate programs. It also offers graduate programs in Education, Counseling, Business, Financial Planning and Public Policy. Head Coach Rich Rider completed his 14th season at Cal Lutheran in 2007-08. Rider was a three year starter at Northeast Missouri State and holds a PhD from the University of Utah in Physical Education. Rider came to CLU from Boise State where he was associate head coach for nine seasons. Before moving to Idaho, Rider coached Chapman College (now University) in Orange, California for nine seasons from 1973 to 1982. Rider had seven winning seasons, guiding the program to a 136-104 overall record. Rider, CLU's winningest coach, had his best season in 2007-08 when he took the Kingsmen to a 21-5 record. Over the last eight years, Rider has averaged 18 wins per season. However, NCAA tournament berths have been hard to come by.

California Lutheran is a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (www.thesciac.org) which is comprised of eight teams -- all from Southern California. Cal Lutheran's 14 game schedule involves playing each team twice, home and away. The farthest conference game is at Redlands about 100 miles from Thousand Oaks. Games are typically played on Wednesday or Thursday and Saturdays. The season concludes with the SCIAC conference winner getting an automatic NCAA berth . Currently, there is no end-of-season conference tournament.
