Founded in 1855 by attorney and abolitionist Ovid Butler, Butler University is a private, comprehensive/liberal arts and science based institution offering over 50 Bachelor degree programs and 10 graduate majors including pharmacy, business and education. Brad Stevens completed his first season at Butler in 2007-08. Stevens took over for Todd Lickliter (Lickliter was named head coach at Iowa) who produced five 20+ winning seasons, four conference championships, three conference tourney titles and three NCAA appearances. Stevens served with Lickliter for six seasons during which Butler compiled a 131-61 record. Prior to joining the Bulldogs' staff in 2000 as an assistant, Stevens coached at Carmel High School. Stevens completed a stellar high school basketball career in 1995 as the all-time basketball scoring leader at Zionsville High School. During his prep career, he set team all-time records for three-point field goals and assists. In 2007-08, Steven's inaugural season, he led the Bulldogs to a 30-4 record and made a second round NCAA appearance before losing to Tennessee.

Butler plays in the Horizon League (www.horizonleague.org) formerly known as the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. The conference is comprised of nine teams from Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio. Though not as well known as other D1 conferences, the Horizon League has recently been one of the top performing conferences in terms of NCAA appearances. Butler plays a 16 game league schedule, playing each team twice, home and away. League play commences in January with games usually played on Wednesday or Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The season concludes with the Horizon League tourney which takes all nine teams with first round byes for the top three and second round byes for the top two. Higher seeds hosts. Winner receives an automatic NCAA bid.
Illinois-Chicago, Detroit Mercy, Loyola, Wright St, Youngstown St, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Cleveland St. Valparaiso will joint the Horizon League 2007-08.
