Head coach Brian Van Haaftten completed his 12th season at Buena Vista in 2007-08. After serving as an assistant for four seasons, Van Haaften took over a program in 1996-97 that had endured five losing seasons out of the previous six, averaging just eight wins per year over that time frame. Van Haaftten is the only coach in Buena Vista's history that has produced a competitive program. During his tenure, Van Haaften (or more fondly called Coach VH on campus) reached the 100 win plateau faster than any coach at the D3 level. Van Haaften was principal and head basketball coach at St. Mary's HS in Storm Lake prior to coming to Buena Vista. In 2007-08, the Beavers went 23-7 and advanced to the D3 Sweet 16 before falling to Washington University (St. Louis).
