Head coach Adrienne Shibles begins her first season at Bowdoin in 2008-09. Shibles took over from Stefanie Pemper who through 10 seasons compiled a sterling 235-48 record. A 1991 graduate of Bates College, Shibles was a two-time captain of the women's basketball team and a 1,000-point scorer. Shibles was the head coach at Swarthmore (Pa.) College from 1996-2005. In her last five seasons at Swarthmore, Shibles averaged over 19 wins per year. In 2007-08, the Polar Bears went 19-9 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tourney before getting beat by Amherst.

Bowdoin plays in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (www.nescac.com) consisting of eleven highly selective liberal arts colleges located in New England and New York. Several of the colleges in this conference are sometimes referred to as the Little Ivies. League play starts in January with games often played on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons. There is a two-three week break at Xmas. The farthest conference away game is at Middlebury, some 300 miles from campus. The top seven teams qualify for the NESCAC tourney; single elimination, top seed hosts, first place team receives first round bye, with the winner receiving an automatic bid the to the NCAA tourney.
