Founded in 1948, Pennsylvania State University Erie, or more commonly know as The Behrend College, is a small technical university offering thirty-one baccalaureate majors and nineteen minors, five associate degree programs, and three graduate programs. Approximately two-thirds of the student body is male. Majors offered include Plastics Engineering, Business Administration, and Mechanical Engineering. US News 2007 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Penn State Erie #46 among universities in the north. Completing his 14th season at Penn State Erie in 2007-08 is head coach Dave Niland. During his tenure, Niland has produced 14 consecutive winning seasons, averaging 18 wins, and made seven trips to the NCAA. 1999-00 was the schools' best record (26-4) and the team advanced all the way to the Elite 8. Niland teams are noted for tough defense. Niland came to The Behrend after spending four seasons as an assistant at Canisius College where his father was head coach. Niland was a player and team captain his senior year at LeMoyne College. In 2007-08, the Lions went 24-5 but were beaten in the second round of the NCAA tournament by Rochester.

Penn State Erie plays in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (www.amcconf.org). The AMCC is comprised of ten teams from of Maryland, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Conference play can begin in early December though non-league opponents are scheduled in until January. Penn State plays an 18 game schedule and will play each team twice, home and away. League games are usually played on Tuesdays and Fridays. The season concludes with the AMCC tourney which includes the top six teams in a single elimination format. The two best teams receive first round byes. Winner receives an automatic NCAA berth.
