Founded by Swedish immigrants in 1881, Bethany College is a small residential liberal arts college offering BA degrees in 14 academic majors and 12 teaching majors. It also offers various pre-professional programs. Majors offered include Forensic Sciences, Global Studies, Criminal Justice, Christian Ministry, and Psychology. Students interested in Bethany must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and a minimum of 19 on the ACT or rank in the top 50% of their graduating class.(Third tier). US News 2008 Report on America's Best Colleges ranked Bethany #44 among colleges in the midwest offering a Bachelor's degree. Head coach Greg Mittlesteadt enters his second season at Bethany in 2007-08. Mittelsteadt took over from Trent May who through six seasons produced a 126-55 record. Mittelsteadt came to Bethany from Avila University where he served as head women’s basketball coach and sports information director. Prior to Avila, Mittelsteadt was the women’s basketball coach and athletic director at Highland Community College, Highland, Kan. He also has served as assistant coach at Upper Iowa University, Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.), Marian College (Wis.) and Martin Luther College (M.N.) Overall he has 18 years coaching experience, including ten as a college head coach. In 2006-07, Mittlesteadt's inaugural season, the Swedes went 5-24.

Bethany plays in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (www.hovpen.com/kcac/kcac/html) which is comprised of ten independent or private schools, all in Kansas. League play commences in December. Bethany will play each team twice, home and away. Games are often played on Monday or Thursday evening and Saturday evening and generally precede the men's. There is a two week break at Xmas.
