Formerly a junior college, Angelo State University was founded in 1965 and is a member of the Texas state university system. It offers over 50 programs at the undergraduate level as well as 21 graduate programs. Degrees offered include Animal Science, Communications, International Business, Journalism, Natural Resource Management, Education, and Nursing. The university leases a 4,600 acre area for its Animal Science and Biology programs. US News 2008 Report on America's Best Colleges ranked Angleo State in the fourth tier among schools in the west offering a Master's degree. The 268 acre campus is located in San Angelo (pop. 90k ). Head coach Sally Walling Brooks enters her 8th season at Angelo State in 2007-08. Brooks took over a program in 2000-01 that had posted a 34-121 mark in the previous six years and had finished last in conference play for three consecutive seasons. In her first season she went 20-8 and garnered the conference championship. Brooks came from the University of the Incarnate Word (NAIA) in San Antonio where she led the Lady Crusaders for nine years while posting a 155-103 mark. Brooks was an all-state selection at Canyon HS and played collegiately at Midwestern State. In 2006-07, Brooks turned in a 17-12 mark - breaking a string of four consecutive 20+ winning season - but did make it to the NCAA tourney, losing to Washburn in the first round.

Angelo State plays in the Lone Star Conference (www.lonestarconference.org). The conference is comprised of 15 teams spread over three states (Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma) and is split into two divisions, north and south. Angelo State plays in the south. The LSC is among the most respected D2 conferences. Currently, conference play can start in early December and generally includes teams from the north division. However, cross divisional games do not count in the conference standings. The Rambelles play a 14 game schedule, playing each team twice in its own division.
