Founded in 1821, Amherst is generally regarded as the most prestigous liberal arts institution in the U.S. Amherst offers over 30 Bachelor degree programs and is part of a consortium of 'five colleges' (Smith, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, Amherst, and UMASS @ Amherst) which permits students to take any course at any of the five. Majors offered include Women's Studies, Computer Science, Anthropology, and Economics. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Amherst #2 among all liberal arts schools in the nation.

The campus is located in suburban Amherst (pop. 35k), about 90 miles from Boston. The Five Colleges are geographically close to one another and are linked by buses which run between the campuses

Dave Hixon completed his 31st season at Amherst in 2007-08. Under Hixon's direction, the men's basketball program has become one of the most respected D3 programs in the nation. The winningest coach in school history, Hixon is the 10th winningest active Division III coach in the nation and the 19th winningest coach in NCAA Division III history with 578 victories. During the 90's, Hixons' teams averaged nearly 18 wins per season and had only one losing season. During his 30 seasons, teams have captured 18 conference tournament titles, nine conference championships, and made ten NCAA appearances including the National Championship in 2007. In 2007-08, Amherst finished with its eighth straight 20+ winning season going 27-4, losing to Washington (St. Louis) in the D3 national championship title game.

Conference and Schedule

Amherst plays in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (www.nescac.com) consisting of eleven highly selective liberal arts colleges located in New England and New York. Several of the colleges in this conference are sometimes referred to as the Little Ivies. League play starts in January with games typically played on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The top eight teams qualify for the NESCAC tourney; single elimination, top seed hosts, first place team receives first round bye, with the winner receiving an automatic bid the to the NCAA tourney.
