About CBSAguide

In the fall of 1999, I attended a Stanford pre-season practice and sat next to parents whose son was on an official visit.  For the next hour, they proceeded to tell me their son's agonizing yet fascinating story about being recruited and deciding which school to attend and play for.  With input from these parents, I created this website which was launched in January 2002.  It was specifically designed with the non-blue chip player in-mind and will aide those players that need to be more resourceful in locating a college to attend and play for.  The site's main attraction is the profiling of the most successful collegiate basketball programs at the NCAA D1, D2, D3, and NAIA levels.  If successful, CBSAguide hopes to expand the site to include profiles for the best college programs in football, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, golf, track and field, and swimming/diving.

What is the Purpose of the CBSAguide?

To provide information, free of charge, to prospective AAU/high school or junior college players, parents and coaches on the most successful collegiate basketball programs. Regardless of one’s basketball abilities, choosing the right school to attend and play for is something that should not be left to chance or necessarily dictated by college coaches. The site is particularly useful in locating the best basketball programs at levels below D1.  Let's face it, many players and parents ignore the D2, D3 and NAIA programs but, in fact, it's where the majority of players out of high school end up playing.

What Information Does CBSAguide Provide?

The site’s main attraction is the profiling of nearly 350 “best” programs. Whether it’s Duke University (D1) or Westmont College (NAIA),  each profile is carefully researched, taking an average 2.5 hours to complete. The site also contains the athletic and school web address for over 1,200 colleges and universities. In addition, under “Finding Your Place”, you will find four excellent essays, written in collaboration with college coaches, describing the differences and similarities between the four levels: NCAA D1, D2, D3, and NAIA.  "Finding Your Place" is a must-read for any parent whose son or daughter plans on playing at the collegiate level.  Finally, links to other sites help prospective recruits locate other valuable information.

Who is Behind CBSAguide?

John Ummel is the creator of CBSAguide. John is a financial analyst for a local water agency, has coached girl’s AAU basketball, and is an avid follower of the sport. John's two daughters and one son spent a small part of their lives playing and watching AAU and high school basketball.  John lives in Redwood City, CA.
